WHAT ABOUT WHISKEY?
WHISKEY 101
Ever felt overwhelmed when strolling down the whiskey aisle in the supermarket? One unpronounceable brand name after another; each bottle labeled with a list of incomprehensible terms ... Despair no more: Craftly can put you in better spirits.
All whiskies are made up of the same three ingredients — grain, water, and yeast — and their production processes (almost) always follow the same five steps: — malting, mashing, fermenting, distilling, and aging. Easy enough, right?
But there are so many whiskies to choose from!
You might say: How can I figure out which one I’ll like the best? Fear not: we’ll break down the three most common formulas for whiskey worldwide, without getting too much in the weeds (or perhaps in this case, grains).
- Single malt whiskey
Made from 100% barley. In the first step of whiskey production (known as malting), barley grains are germinated. This helps to develop enzymes that will convert the starch in the grains into fermentable sugar, a process completed in the later mashing phase.
A malt whiskey is called single when it is made at only one distillery.
Even today, many Irish and Scottish whiskies are single malts. In Japan, this tradition has also been widely adopted. - Grain whiskey
Made from a solid foundation of malted barley in the mash, but also others: rye (Canada & US), wheat/oats (Ireland), corn/maize (US)
The distillation process of grain whiskey runs continuously in one batch. This results in a higher-strength output, but also a fairly neutral flavor, which is exactly why grain whiskey often ends up in ... a blend. - Blended whiskey
Made from mixing different types of whiskey — in some cases, as many as 50! – of just malts, or of a combination of malt and grain whiskies. Their selection and variety, along with the mixing ratio, are the pride of every distillery, as well as their carefully-guarded secret!
It allows for very sophisticated and, most importantly, consistent aromas and flavors. The blending process originated in Scotland in the 19th century. Since then, blended Scotches have become a worldwide success story.
GEOGRAPHY'S DECIDING NOTE
Each region or country has its own rules defining what may or may not be called and sold as whiskey. Whiskey production is a strictly regulated business and often follows local traditions. These factors together mean that whiskey can taste different when it’s made and sold in different places: to find what you like, it’s worthwhile to keep an eye on the origin of a bottle when buying and sampling spirits.
THE WOOD CHIPS: AGE AND ENRICH
Infusing spirits with wood chips is a DIY way to age your alcohol from home, creating a richer, more flavorful drink.
American Sweetheart:
has a subtle, easy-to-drink sweetness, without the rough edges of some other full-flavored whiskies.
Dark Chocolate:
is a very intense sensation for your taste buds, thanks to deep roasting. This blend will blast your palate with powerful spicy aromas.

Our recommendation: use "Dark Chocolate" wood chips for best flavor. — Nutty and slightly bitter, cocoa bean nibs come from the cacao tree (Theobroma cacao). The name says it all: cocoa truly is the “food of the gods” (theós = god, brôma = food)! | Our recommendation: use "American Sweetheart" wood chips for best flavor. — This mix kicks off with lemon peel, bringing an intense, sweet, and slightly bitter citrus flavor. Lemons originate from India and are among the most widely grown fruits in the world. |

Savor the flavor: coffea arabica beans are considered to be the finest on the market. | — A pop of orange peel adds a tangy twist to this zesty blend. — Topping off this warm blend, a dash of cinnamon adds a lightly spicy, woody flavor to your whiskey. One of the oldest spices in the world, cinnamon comes from the sweet-tasting bark of the Cassia cinnamon tree (Cinnamomum cassia). | — This restorative infusion finishes with ginger, adding a fresh, warm, and comforting complexity to your whiskey. This spice has been used in both the kitchen and natural medicine since the 1st century. |
NOW YOU’RE READY TO CREATE!
- Put ⅓ of one bag of wood chips of your choice into the bottle. Add white/unaged whiskey.
- Let the mixture sit for at least four weeks (the longer it rests, the stronger the flavor).
- Filter out wood chips using funnel and strainer.
- It’s time to make your infusion! Add ½ of one bag of the spice blend of your choice. For extra flavor, crush spices beforehand.
- Refrigerate mixture for one week.
- You’re almost done! Filter out botanicals and personalize your whiskey byadding a label.
- Add your new signature whiskey to the cocktail of your choice. Cheers!
COCKTAIL RECIPES
Want to take your infusion to the next level? We‘ve come up with some creative (and delicious!) whiskey cocktail recipes for you to bring out the best in your homemade infusion. Feel free to add your own twists with ingredients from your home or garden: you‘re in charge!
Irish Coffee
- 1 ½ oz infused whiskey (Irish Coffee)
- 4 oz coffee
- 2 tsp brown sugar
- 1 oz heavy cream (lightly whipped)
Step-by-Step
- Pour brown sugar into a heatproof glass.
- Add the coffee and the whiskey.
- Stir until the sugar is dissolved.
- Top off with whipped cream. Our tip: don’t stir, and drink the Irish coffee through the cream for optimal taste.
- Enjoy!

Whiskey Ginger Ale
- 1 ½ oz infused whiskey (Citrus Tincture)
- 5 oz ginger ale
- 1 oz lemon juice
- 1 lime wedge
- Ice
Step-by-Step
- Combine whiskey, ginger ale, and ice in a highball glass.
- Squeeze half a lime into the glass.
- Garnish your drink with the rest of the lime wedge.
